Roll Call: 3 Electronic Workshop

NOTE

Although 3 Electronic Workshop – or 3 Electrical Workshop – was responsible for the sound and lighting at all the CTMTs through the years, it did not always have a separate entry in the programme notes.

Programme Notes: CTMT 2004

“3 Electronic Workshop, based at Wonderboom Military Base outside Pretoria, is a highly specialised signals unit responsible for the maintenance, repair and installation of all electronic equipment in the South African Army… not to mention providing sound and lighting to events such as the Cape Town Military Tattoo. It consists of several specialised components: the Electrical Department, the Mechanical Department, and the Diverse Systems Troop, whose Sound Team is handling the Cape Town Military Tattoo’s sound and lighting.

The unit dates back all the way to World War II, when it formed part of 61 Base Workshop, headquartered at Cullinan, near Pretoria, on the site of today’s Zonderwater Prison, which still uses the original gates the unit erected there. It then became a fully-fledged unit named I Base Signals Workshop, SA Corps of Signals, and then was renamed 3 Electronic Workshop in 1972. ” (CTMT 2004)
