Programme Notes: CTMT 2004
“The Stellenbosch Youth Jazz Band has been going for less than a year, but its 23 members, ranging in age from 14 to 23, have already begun to make a name for themselves under the baton of Mrs Felicia Lesch. The band, whose members’ backgrounds are as varied as their ages – they come from areas like Pinelands, Lotus River, Kuilsriver, Steenberg, Genadendal and Athlone – derives from an outreach project of the Music Department of the University of Stellenbosch, and forms part of the Music Department’s certificate programme.
It is a real ‘big band’ of 23 pieces: four alto saxophones, two tenor saxophones, a double bass, a clarinet, three flutes, four trumpets, three trombones, two tubas, a keyboard and a set of drums, and so far it has performed successfully at a number of significant venues: the Big Band Festival at the Baxter Theatre in May, the SACS Anniversary Festival in August, and the National Youth Jazz Festival in Grahamstown. Five of the members were also selected for the National Youth Jazz Band, and one of the players performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague in July this year, as part of the National Youth Jazz Combo, for which he was selected in 2003.” (CTMT 2004)
